Which is Better?

JDM cars for sale like the 2001 MR2 Spyder in the picture aren’t that common in the U.S. There are rules and regulations about the used vehicles that can be imported into the States so it’s more common to find cars a bit older, often around the early 90s.  The JDM car in the picture was listed on Craigslist as a show car so that may have something to do with it being available.  It seems like a fairly decent deal as well.  It has 40,000 miles on it, is 100% street legal, and listed for $15,000.  Enthusiasts will be pleased to find things like a carbon fiber hood and Rota wheels which are a popular brand of JDM rims.

JDM wheels can be quite expensive.  Konig, Rota, Advan and Spun are some of the most popular brands.  Everything is available from drag racing to fancy gold rims.  They average close to $400 a piece in price so it might be a good idea to search places like ebay and craigslist for a deal.  However, even the used JDM wheels sell for $200 each on up.  They are some reasons for the expense.  First is that they are relatively rare in the sense that your local auto store isn’t going to be carrying them.  They must be bought from an individual or a shop specializing in JDM wheels.  A quick search through Google reveals that even online availability is limited to a few stores.  Thankfully a few of these stores are quite thorough and should have what you are seeking.

JDM engines seem to be the most sought after part.  It makes sense.  New engines are expensive and a JDM engine with low mileage might be in nearly perfect condition but cost much less than new.  Japan has pretty tight emission standards which causes many lightly used engines to fail that emission tests.  JDM motors with as little as 30,000 miles might fail the test.  So instead of tossing out a perfectly working engine, it gets shipped to the U.S. where the emission standards are not as strict.  The JDM motor will get tested, tweaked to any different standards or codes the U.S. requires and then sent out into the market.

The thing to remember here is that you don’t have to be an enthusiast to benefit from Japan’s strict requirements.  Most people have never heard of the Japanese Domestic Market so for the most part, it’s just gear heads with a love for these vehicles and parts that are providing most of the demand.  Maybe if more of the public was aware of the potential price savings on these quality parts, the demand could bring them into the mainstream and make them more available.

Pay attention to quality
